I.8.2 Pompeii. May 2004. Looking south across atrium to tablinum with peristyle beyond. According to Jashemski, two steps led up to the tablinum from the atrium. At the rear of the tablinum was the peristyle, which was enclosed by a portico on four sides. None of the columns are standing today, and part of the floor on the north, east and west portico was also destroyed by bombing in 1943. A gutter at the edge of the garden collected rain water which was stored in the large cistern under the peristyle. The water appeared to have been used in the adjacent dye-shop (I.8.19) at the rear. See Jashemski, W. F., 1993. The Gardens of Pompeii, Volume II: Appendices. New York: Caratzas. (p.42)
