I.9.12 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 2, doorway to room on west side of entrance.
According to Fulford, when re-examined in 1995-6, it was found that this room had been left almost completely unexcavated, and had lapilli coming out of its doorway.
Originally, the walls of the room had been decorated with plain white plaster, and there was the possible existence of a staircase against the south wall. In 79AD, it was being used as a stable for one mule. Found in the north-west corner, was its skeleton. Two iron rings were discovered close to its head, which may have indicated that it had been tethered. Resting against one back leg, and pinned down by the other, was the skeleton of a dog. Found beneath the mule were the remains of a rectangular wooden trough or manger built against the north wall. This was recognised by voids in the lapilli and volcanic ash. Also found were the broken remains of the lower part of an amphora, perhaps holding water for the animals.
See Fulford, M. and Wallace-Hadrill, A: Rivista di Studi Pompeiani, VII, 1995-6, The House of Amarantus: an interim report on Survey and Excavations in 1995-96. (p.77-113).
