According to Wilhelmina, this area had been hurriedly cleared of lapilli in 1954-55, when the lapilli was sold to a contractor in Salerno every two weeks.
After the weeds and brambles were cleared away, the low walls revealed the limit of the north-west part of the insula, on the east, south and west sides.
The northern side could not be mapped as it was still under original lapilli.
They could not find an entrance to the area but found indications that it was from the still unexcavated house in the south-west corner.
This insula had been completely walled in modern times and leaving no entrances, all work on this insula had to be carried out by climbing over the wall by ladder, and then bringing over the equipment needed, wheelbarrows, etc. A ramp was built for easier access. Once onto the site, there was no shade at all.

According to Wilhelmina, “There was still a covering of original lapilli up to five feet deep in the south-east part along the wall.
By the late afternoon of the first day, three well-preserved ridges had been found, with evidence of small roots.
In the following days the lapilli was cleared from this area, and eventually high mounded ridges were found running from east to west, which contained the cavities of small vine roots, on average almost four Roman feet apart. Tree root cavities were found along the edge of the vineyard near the east and south walls.”

According to Wilhelmina,
“To the west of the vineyard was a masonry triclinium which had been only partially excavated, much of it was still protected by considerable lapilli.
A round table was found between the couches, and a rectangular serving table was found to its side.
All had originally been covered with red stucco.
Identified as being painted on the round table were small myrtle wreathes with white flowers and large poorly painted fruit, perhaps peaches.”
