IX.3.5 Pompeii. May 2006. North-east corner of atrium. According to Dyer: “This house appeared to have been under repair at the time of the eruption; at least we cannot in any other way account for the rough state in which the impluvium or water-basin, in the atrium was found. It was no doubt intended to be lined with marble: in its present state it forms a strong contrast with the elegance of the rest of the atrium. This has a pavement of white mosaic; the lower part of the walls are painted in imitation of variously-coloured marbles; above, the walls are blue and ornamented with grotesques; the whole surmounted by a frieze of gilt stucco, many fragments of which were found during the excavation. The bed-chambers and other rooms which surround the atrium contained several good paintings, some of which have been removed to Naples Museum.
